24hrs x blackbear – Regina George

24hrs blackbear

I read an article yesterday in Vulture entitled, How A Hit Happens Now. Click the link to read for yourself. I found the insights from top executives at major labels interesting, not surprising however. The article discussed the viability of music streaming as the new revenue stream to bring the music industry to where it was before Napster. It also discussed the hip-hop genre as a clear winner in 2017, looking at overall streams as the determining factor of success.

I’ve always liked hip-hop, tho, I feel there’s been a decline in lyrical cleverness, which is part of what made me love the genre in the first place. Today’s rap game has more of an ambient trap feel with chill R&B lyrics. I still think today’s rap today is best for a casual pregame or party because it’s easy to move to while giving off easy-following melodies for the most relaxed OR hype party environments.  That being said, I’ve been trying to write more about hip-hop, so why not start with a new single by 24hrs and blackbear, Regina George.

This song is HOT, combining blackbear’s more pop-style hip-hop tracks with 24’s melancholic vibe. blackbear is a menace in the game, coming off his most recent album, cybersex, which featured an insane lineup of collabs with 2 Chainz, Cam’ron, Machine Gun Kelly, Tinashe, FRND, T-Pain, Rick Ross, Ne-Yo, and THEY. Easily an all-star baseball lineup. blackbear’s highest publicized achievement came in co-writting Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend, which peaked at #2 on Billboard.

24hrs is an Oakland-born, Atlanta-based singer/rapper who released his debut EP, Open,  in 2016. He released his debut album, Night Shift, in 2017, which featured Ty Dolla $ign and Wiz Khalifa. He’s also collaborated with Future, G-Eazy, PnB Rock, Gucci Mane, and MadeinTYO, who happens to be his brother.

The two look to release a joint project, 24bears, of witch Regina George is going to take part.
