Aly Ryan The Misfit: An Artist Interview

aly ryan interview

Aly Ryan is a pop singer from all over the world. She’s German; however, her parents were war journalists in Moscow, forcing her to travel often. She was never really able to feel settled. She eventually moved to Los Angeles at the age of 16 to pursue music. She found her crew of wild, crazy friends. They had no problems being misfits 🙂

She was able to team up with producer Babyface while in LA. She reached out to him on Facebook, asking for a collab. Babyface was impressed enough to agree. The duo teamed up with two other producers: Jose Aguirre Lopez and Fabian Ordorica. Her debut EP was their final product.

She released her debut EP, The Misfits, at the age of 20. The EP gained 20 million streams on Soundcloud, and the leading single, No Parachute, charted at the #1 spot in Germany, France, and Russia.

We had a chance to interview Aly Ryan, the up and coming pop star, below. You know the drill. Click play on her Soundcloud embed and read the full interview below for the FULL Aly Ryan experience. The first song is her newest single, Borrow Time.

INTERVIEW:

Where are you from and how has that shaped the musician you are today?

I’m from Germany. Traveling a lot when I was young and the different cultures I got to experience have definitely shaped my point of view when writing songs. Sometimes I write things that don’t even make sense in English cuz I might have directly translated it from German. I think it’s also made me more aware of people and their differences. At the same time tho, I feel like we are all the same and a lot of stuff is just culturally different not humanely different.

What instruments did you all play when you were younger?

I taught myself piano and guitar at a young age. I just started by learning different chords and then putting them together. Then I started finding out that if I add 9 to a chord or use certain inversions you can create different moods with technically the same chords. It’s pretty cool. I love writing on the piano because I feel like the instrument carries so much emotion.

Are there an instruments that you currently wish you COULD play?

I wish I could play the drums. I think that would be pretty awesome. It’s one of my favorite instruments and the thing I look out for most when playing with different bands is do they have a great drummer. I think that’s what I’m most picky about lol

What was your favorite studio moment when producing your newest EP, The Misfits?

I love cutting vocals. I forget time. Putting all my emotions into the song by trying different things and hearing the final product. I feel like vocals are the icing on the song cake ? LOL. If I cut a final vocal it really needs to do the writing and production justice. I usually cut a vocal within 1-2 hours I love just doing full takes singing the whole song through at once. That way I feel like none of the emotions get lost and you can build the song.

What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music?

I like to go to the movies. I got this new app movie pass and so I love to go out with friends, get some popcorn and nachos and just chill at the movie theatre.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?

I support and am a part of the Philip Julius e.V which is a non profit organization for severely handicapped children. My family created the foundation after my handicapped brother passed away in 2011. The foundation makes it easier for families with handicapped children to live their lives, travel and create a happy environment and living situation for their children as well as themselves.

Who are your musical influences?

It’s a tough one. I have so many. I listen to a lot of different music because I feel like when you listen to one artist all the time you start imitating them and I try to avoid that so my music taste always stays eclectic.

What are some of your favorite venues to play and why?

I played El Rey Theater last year with Zane carney who is the lead guitar player for John Mayer. I really loved the venue, sound and vibe. Was definitely one of my favorites.

What mic do you prefer to sing on?

I don’t think it’s as much about the microphone as it is about The plug ins ?

Do you have a songwriting tip for beginners out there?

yea, I think it’s all about going with your story and what feels right to you. Generally I would say the chorus is there to sum up your point and in the verses you should talk about all the little details and the things that haven’t been mentioned and lead up to the point you’re trying to make. But everyone has to go with what feels right to them ?

Where has been one of your favorite places in the world to travel to?

I love Tel Aviv, Israel. Definitely one of my favorite places in the world.

Do you have a favorite in-studio snack?

anything chocolate LOL

What is your favorite social media platform and why?

I love them all but probably spend most of my time on Instagram.

If you were a Spotify playlist, which one would you be?

definitely Mood Booster

What is next for ALY RYAN?

I’m going to release more music in 2018 and hopefully go on tour soon to meet my fans & get to sing to them in person.
