Essonite – Within Living Memory EP
Young Pretty Lights?!?! Essonite’s sound has the funk, hip-hop, electro style vibe that I first fell in love with from Pretty Lights. Ahhhhhh PL throws some of the best shows on the planet. This song is almost carbon copy Pretty Lights, and I absolutely love it. Electro-Funk is my not guilty pleasure – it’s the opposite of a guilty pleasure because I don’t feel bad what-so-ever about it.
This entire rant is mostly coming after hearing The Thrill Is Gone, the first single off the Philadelphia-based duo’s EP Within Living Memory. The entire EP consists of a similar vibe. The Thrill Is Gone is probably my favorite track on the EP because it’s a bit more uptempo than the rest. The entire EP is certainly worth a listen to if you like Pretty Lights, GRiZ, or Big Gigantic.
Essonite is comprised of Martin Esser and Will Loftus. The group features modular sounds, vinyl modification and beats provided by Martin, with guitar from Will. They have that live jam band groove with electro funk, jazz, and hip-hop elements that create for my personal favorite genre in electronic music.
The two roomed together, and began making music together, both extremely passionate about creating music and experimenting with new sounds. This version of electronic music blending with live instrumentation is the future of electronic music in my opinion. There is a bit more practice involved in creating a live set, since you’re creating arrangement with way more sounds available to you, THEN you have to practice playing it live.
I had the pleasure to watch Pretty Lights live in New York City, and it was quite a site to see. Excited to hear what Essonite comes with next.
