Danish Duo, TooManyLeftHands, Set to Rock Fredagsrock

TMLH Fredagsrock interview

We’ve had the pleasure to interview one of the most prestigious DJ duos to ever grace Denmark, TooManyLeftHands, made up of Anders K and Martin Nick. The electronic production and DJ duo has won the Club Act of the Year at the Danish Grammys and DJ of the Year at the Danish DJ Awards.

Tomorrow, Friday (05/19) at 10pm ET in the US, witness TooManyLeftHands play with Kato at Fredagsrock in Tivoli, Copenhagen. Fredagsrock is Denmark’s most popular venue for open-air concerts. In English, Fredagsrock translates into “Friday’s Rock,” leading us to tell you that they have amazing shows every Friday. The music ranges from pop to electronic to rock to rap, hosting an eclectic variety of artists including Lil Wayne, Brian Wilson, House of Pain, 5 Seconds of Summer, TooManyLeftHands, Erykah Badu and Denmark crooner, Mads Langer.

It’s estimated that around half a million music fans worldwide will attend this year’s 20th anniversary. Throughout the summer, the venue will host 24 shows featuring 33 bands.

You know the drill, play the TooManyLeftHands playlist we’ve created below and read the interview for the FULL TooManyLeftHands experience. Martin answered the first two questions and Anders answered the rest.

The last track is nearly a 2-hour mix of tracks by all the artist who performed at the Magicbox stage at Tinderbox Festival 2015. I’ve been listening to it while I write this, and it’s FIRE!

INTERVIEW:

Where does the name TooManyLeftHands come from and why did you pick it?

In Danish, there is a saying about having only left hands. It’s a lot like the English “all thumbs” idiom, which pretty much describes our first experience DJ’ing together. Everybody has their own moves and routines in a DJ booth, especially Anders who had played for 10 years, so playing together the first time, was a fun (but not so successful) experience. Since then, we have played more than 400 gigs and now know exactly what the other one is doing.

Where are you from and how has that shaped the musicians you are today?

We are both from Copenhagen, Denmark. We have been working with music and nightlife our whole life. I think that we, at an early age, started listening to many of the Swedish producers.

What instruments did you play when you were younger?

None of us are actually playing any instruments. I [Anders] was playing as a DJ many years before going into music production. I started from scratch, learning the basics about programming beats with the basic chords, but even though we had to learn everything from scratch at the age of twenty-something, I think we are doing okay!

Are there an instruments that you currently wish you COULD play?

There are many, but the Saxophone is definitely on of my favorite instruments. Maybe the sexiest instrument in the world.

What has been your favorite studio moment when producing your new single, Mad For It?

When you produce a track, there is always that one breakthrough moment where you know you’ve made something good. In the process with Mad For It, it was very early in the process when I made the topline melody!

What festival are you looking forward to the most this year?

The top 3 of this summer’s festival gigs for us would be Summerburst Festival (Stockholm, Sweden. Mainstage), Tinderbox Festival (Odense, Denmark. Magicbox stage), and Distortion Festival (Copenhagen, Denmark. Mainstage)

What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music?

We are good at finding good restaurants and good food. We spend a lot of time eating while on tour, so much so that we are thinking about starting a food/travel blog! ?

Who are your musical influences?

There are many, but Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Axwell are definitely some of them.

What DAW do you use?

Ableton Live 9

Do you have a favorite or go-to sample pack?

We try to use as many different sample packages as possible, so our sounds are not are the same, but Cymatics sample packs are always useful!

What is one of your favorite or go-to VST Plugin?

 Kontakt, Serum and Sylenth1

What is your favorite color?

Black.

What food do you eat the most?

We eat sushi… A lot of sushi, and a lot of steaks too…

Do you have a favorite in-studio snack?

Our studio is based in the centre of Copenhagen, and it is literally just below the best steakhouse in Copenhagen, so it happens that we go there for lunch… maybe a bit too much!

What is your favorite social media platform and why?

We use our snap chat a lot, but our name is too long for a snap chat account! ? – it’s TooManyLeftHand (without the S)

What is next for TooManyLeftHands?

After a busy summer with festivals and gigs in 9 countries, we will spend fall in the studio and finish a lot of new tracks!
