Grandtheft – Square One (feat. MAX)
Grandtheft releases his new single, Square One, featuring MAX, a song that blends Grandtheft’s heavy bass style with a lower-tempo R&B/pop vibe. Genre mixing at its finest, as I’m noticing a trend of heavy bass producers playing with more pop arrangements in the winter season. What I love most about heavy bass producers creating more pop style tracks is their precision within the percussion sounds and arrangements. The high-hat arrangement is super dynamic and the snares and kicks hit you in the face harder. Drums are the backbone of most songs, so I love hearing them more out in front of the mix.
The song below culminates into a future bass/trap vibe with big synths and high octave vocal chops that create a dreamscape of synths, or as I like to call it, a synthscape. The melody and heaviness of the synths create a beautiful contrast between harmony and power.
I’ve seen Grandtheft a couple times, his live mixing is truly impressive, making him one of the best live DJs that Canada has to offer. He sent a quote along about the song.
“Square One is at once about disappointment and coming to terms with an ending, but also restarting with strength and self-awareness. It’s masculine but compassionate. There is a fall/winter mood to it – the bittersweet quality of the song mirrors wanting keep yourself warm in the face of increasingly cold weather. I find it reassuring because everyone feels like that when they have to through a tough or new experience – and we had a lot of fun writing it.”
MAX is a singer/songwriter from New York and half of Party Pupils. This is his debut on Trap Nation’s Lowly imprint. Starting January 19th, Grandtheft will embark on his Square One World Tour.
