Julian Calor Ft. Maggie Szabo – Run Away

Julian Calor Run Away

This weekend is one of the best weekends of the entire year. Super Bowl weekend should be a national holiday (including the ensuing Monday) #makethesuperbowlanationalholiday. It’s for jocks, cooks, kooks, and commercial connoisseurs. The Super Bowl has something for everyone, just like this song.

Run Away (featuring Maggie Szabo) by Julian Calor – an up-and-coming 24 year old DJ and Producer from the Netherlands – is the perfect song to ring in Super Bowl weekend. From the recently released Charge Me Up EP, It’s got a bit of everything. Maggie Szabo – a Canadian transplant now living in LA – absolutely crushes it on the vocals, and Julian Calor smartly allows her soulful voice to provide the emotional oomph to the track. The song kicks off with a classic Julian Calor beat; heavy on the synth, but not dark (it kind of reminded me a little of playing “Jacks” — rising and falling, jumpy and jovial, but also serious and infatuating), in consortium with the powerful voice of Maggie Szabo, who wastes no time letting you know she’s a feature on the track. And Julian Calor has no right, rhyme, or reason to keep her from shining, and has the wherewithal to focus on what he does best: making dope ass beats.

As the song progresses to the chorus, Julian drizzles the beat with additional components, from percussion to piano to a heavier synth-bass, you can almost hear his thought process as you travel through the track with him and Maggie. And, as if to prove he recognizes what and who he’s working with, he drops to simple piano loop overlapped only by Maggie’s beautiful vocals, right before chorus drops. And boy/girl does it drop. It’s fun, it’s kinky, it’s uplifting, it’s dreamy, and it’s got just what you need for a Super Bowl weekend; enough of a kick to get you going for a Friday night out (drink responsibly everybody!) or a Super Bowl pregame where you have to finely balance the vibe for the hungover v. Sunday-funday crew.

After spending the first 11 years of his life overseas, Logan Meltzer aka Smogs, moved to the DMV in 2001 with nothing but a dream of becoming a professional rapping soccer star who could also dunk and do stand-up comedy. And while 100% of those dreams are still in progress, he gets to live a new one now by writing about music. Having graduated from Haverford College, where he DJ’d for OnCue, RDGRNGLD, 3LAU and others (shout out Philly!), Smogs moved to Washington D.C. to work in communications with non-profit organizations, before selling his soul to a Fortune 500. After escaping the succubus, a good friend and now-mentor encouraged Smogs to try his hand at music writing. And as the ol’ saying goes, the rest is happening now... Ride or die Washington sports (especially the Nationals). The Devil Wears Prada 4 lyfe. What fruit hates marriage? A cantaloupe (can’t-elope)
