Misunderstood – GHETTO STYLE
Misunderstood has released their debut single, Ghetto Style, and I can’t stop from feeling nostalgic from the 90s pop vibe mixed with modern R&B elements and a hint of Latin swing. I can’t help but think modern Backstreet Boys or Boys II Men (this will become relevant later in the post). The song was written by Misunderstood and Maegan Cottone who has written for Little Mix, Britney Spears and Olly Murs.
Misunderstood is comprised of Stephan Benson and Jeff Okyere from South East London. The two met in school at the prestigious BRIT School of Performing Arts and bonded over similarities in their childhoods, music, and dancing. After graduating, they joined the dance crew, Myztikal, and reached the semi-finals of the televised talent contest Britain’s Got Talent in 2010. After their run on BGT, they Stephan and Jeff formed Misunderstood.
In 2012, Misunderstood had the opportunity to open for UK Rapper Chip and Boyz II Men, on their Boyz 2 Men TOUR. They’ve been supported by Will.i.Am, and have partied with Beyoncé in West Hollywood. They’ve grown organically up until this point, touring with acts such as Chipmunk, Stooshe, DJ Fresh and Boys II Men.
They sent along a quote about their message…
“Our message is simple,” says Stephan. “It’s about being free to be yourself. It’s about being happy in you. It’s about having fun. It’s storytelling about the people who aren’t being shouted about. You’ll see and hear that in everything; the music, our style and in our videos. Our personalities and beliefs are bottled into our music.”
Let me make something clear. I LOVED this song right when I heard it. I couldn’t help from smiling and wanting to find a dance partner to swing around. For me, this was one of the more infectious songs I’ve heard on the pop side of things.
