We’re Doing It Live with Savoy: An Artist Interview

Savoy is a Boulder born, Brooklyn based electronic rock trio consisting of DJ Gray Smith, DJ/Guitarist Ben Eberdt, and drummer Mike Kelly (aka WetBandit aka Naked Drummer). I’ve personally been following them for quite a while now. I DJ’ed in college, and one of my favorite songs to play after 2am was I’m In NeedSome super early dubstep sounds that got the late night crowd head-banging like crazy. This was in 2011, so these guys are veterans in the electronic music game.

Their sound has developed since, changing with the times while implementing their unique show to the electronic scene. It’s a completely live electronic show. The live electronic show is a natural progression in the electronic music space, weeding out the play pressers and hand waving DJs. Savoy’s new projects along with their live show element remind me of a combination between ODESZA, Tycho and Emancipator (with sprinkles of RJD2 drizzled on top).

We had the opportunity to interview Savoy below. You know the drill, click play on the Soundcloud embed and read the full interview below for the FULL Savoy experience.

After spending the first 11 years of his life overseas, Logan Meltzer aka Smogs, moved to the DMV in 2001 with nothing but a dream of becoming a professional rapping soccer star who could also dunk and do stand-up comedy. And while 100% of those dreams are still in progress, he gets to live a new one now by writing about music. Having graduated from Haverford College, where he DJ’d for OnCue, RDGRNGLD, 3LAU and others (shout out Philly!), Smogs moved to Washington D.C. to work in communications with non-profit organizations, before selling his soul to a Fortune 500. After escaping the succubus, a good friend and now-mentor encouraged Smogs to try his hand at music writing. And as the ol’ saying goes, the rest is happening now... Ride or die Washington sports (especially the Nationals). The Devil Wears Prada 4 lyfe. What fruit hates marriage? A cantaloupe (can’t-elope)
