The Swoons – Plug
The Swoons release their new single Plug, a track off their upcoming EP. When the hook dropped, I felt like I swallowed a pill…in a good way. That swallowing sound is what I envision at the 0:55 moment, and I loved it. A bit of me also felt like I was sinking, and that vocal chop was contrasted nicely with those pop vocals. What I like most about The Swoons is their ability to cross promote indie, electronic, and future bass genres with pop style arrangements. Their music is super digestible, and they always come with a unique sound on their hooks. Click HERE to see other songs I’ve reviewed from them. Plug has a darker side than their other releases, showing a more experimental version to the trio’s past productions.
The trio sent a quote along about Plug…
“We wrote this record last year with it starting out as a simple piano and vocal demo. The concept was inspired by the idea that often in relationships when things are on the brink of falling part we sometimes find ourselves being pulled closer than we were before. You can find yourself closer with someone after an argument if you choose not to let go and so we spun this idea into a song. Funnily enough a lot of the production came together over the phone (yes not even Skype or video chat due to bad internet signal haha) as Matt was in Boston, Tony was on tour with The Chainsmokers and Giacomo was in California so it was a bit crazy haha! After numerous bounces and different versions with different synths and drum grooves we finally had the final production. There was just something about the swinging feel of the drop coupled with indie-electronic flare in the sound design that emotionally for us matched the lyrical content of the chorus.”
The Swoons are Matt Underwood, Tony Ann (keyboardist on The Chainsmokers Memories: Do Not Open tour), and Giacomo Timbrello who are from London, Toronto, and LA respectively. They all attended Berklee College of Music, where they met. Their debut EP is due in 2018, and I’m pumped for this eclectic electro-pop.
