WALLACE – Diaspora (Prod. Crooked Letter)
New Zealand neo-soul/jazz singer Wallace is back with her first track of 2017, Diaspora, a Nigerian-funk inspired track with innocent soul vocals. The song was produced by Australian producer and vocalist Crooked Letter. The song is a combination of genre’s including jazz, blues, hip-hop and soul.
This is a cross-combination that we love here at rBeatz. In fact, this is the TRUE essence of what we’re trying to create and inspire: two individuals taking experiences and inspirations from their own cultures and combining it into one beautiful work of art.
The production comes from Jerry Agbinya (a.k.a. Crooked Letter) with an exploration of sound from his parents’ homeland. Wallace sings about her own diasporic experience, with her Scottish father raising her in New Zealand.
Let’s listen to what Wallace had to say about the track…
“I wanted to highlight the connection that we both feel towards places where we didn’t grow up. We bonded over the idea that looking back at our roots gave us a sense of affirmation and appreciation for what makes us who we are”.
“My Granny Gollan has always joked that if my dad was any further away he’d be on his way back. Back being Dundee, Scotland, which he left when he was in his early twenties. So excited to have his beautiful voice make a sneaky cameo on the track.”
