Survival, Sound, and Staying Present
On this episode of Local Music Somewhere, Terry Hudson sits down with musical artist J Timber for a deeply personal conversation about addiction, recovery, and the healing power of music. Born in New York and raised in North Carolina, J Timber shares how his raw, soulful sound and a simple phrase from a friend—“Just drink the music”—helped change the direction of his life. Now over six years sober, those words have become both a promise and the foundation of his latest creative project. This episode explores survival, discipline, and what it means to choose music as a path forward when everything else feels uncertain.

J Timber
Only a few artists can perform all night long with just a guitar; J Timber is one of them. A NY-born, NC-raised musician with a style all his own, J Timber has been described as a mixture of Lenny Kravitz, Bob Marley, and Nirvana (I know, right…). The power of music has literally saved this young man’s life.
Addiction to drugs and alcohol sent J Timber spiraling down a lonely path. One night, while in a local bar, a good friend pulled Timber aside and said, “Just drink the music.” Something about those words resonated so profoundly that J Timber vowed to sober up from then on.
6 plus years sober and he has continually kept his promise to friends and family. Not only did he honor his commitment, but the words “Drink The Music” have become the title of his latest creative project.
