How Jeff Moder & Nate Whittenburg Turn Life into Music: A Charlotte Singer-Songwriter Duo in Motion
About Me – Jeff Moder
Jeff Moder is a Charlotte based singer-songwriter. His music is heavily inspired by Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and you can certainly hear these influences in his songs. Jeff began his musical career as a drummer, playing in several 80’s progressive rock bands in the southern Ohio area, before switching to guitar as his primary instrument. After relocating to Charlotte, he began to perform again in 2017. Since then, he has played as a solo artist, as part of duo and trio acts as Jeff Moder Music, as well as two local bands: “Under the Influence” from 2019 to 2022 and “Without the Numbers”. He’s currently involved in a duo project with his pal Nate Whittenburg, playing under the name Gravel Road. Gravel Road is working on a record that will release in 2026.
Nate Whittenburg is my musical muse. Certainly not as successful, but think about how much Mike Campbell added to Tom Petty’s songs. Nate played a huge role in helping me make my record, Lost & Found, released in 2024.
A little background—-Nate and I met in 2017 and within a year, we started to occasionally play together. As our friendship grew, so did our musical collaboration.
When I wrote the songs for Lost & Found, I worked closely with Nate and he added his talent and direction to the songs. Many of the melodic lead lines and ideas for instrumentation came from Nate.
During the making of the record, we found that we had very similar musical influences (The Beatles (of course), Dylan, Petty, Oasis, Jason Isbell and Tyler Childress to name a few. We also have continued to play in bands (Under the Influence, Without the Numbers and earlier this year, we formed a duo called Gravel Road.
Currently, we have written many of the songs for our next joint project and are rehearsing the songs with new band members with the goal of being in the studio early next year for a target release at the end of 2026.
Upcoming Events
Gravel Road is working on a record that will release in 2026.
